Learning to be Yourself

I often find myself having a difficult time accepting myself as I am. The temptation to want to compare myself with others looks, intelligence, age, or other traits often creeps in. And I forget that I have something to offer as myself; as God made me. And yes I’m not perfect, but no one is. As the saying goes “I am a work in progress”. And the best way to make progress is to be me and learn from my mistakes. Any other way interferes with the progress. And if I feel depressed or anxious, it’s okay. It’s part of who I am and beating myself up by putting myself down will not make things better. Sometimes just relaxing and allowing myself to be will make things better. And as usual, when I feel discouraged or unmotivated, I reach for music. Thank God, the music I find is positive. The video below is for a song that I’ve been listening to the past couple of weeks. It’s been very encouraging when I was feeling down or stressed with school. The song is “Who You Are” sung by a British singer named Jessie J, who I had never heard of until I heard this song in the movie Step Up 3D. I think it is a very uplifting song. Enjoy. I couldn’t find the video without a commercial, so for the first few seconds you have a commercial and then you can choose to skip it after five seconds (sorry about that).

About Claudia

Hi!! My name is Claudia. Blogging is sort of a creative/therapeutic activity for me. I blog about being a wife, mother, student, caseworker, and simply being human through photography, words, music, and blog challenges. Mental illness has also been part of my life, so you'll sometimes find mental health and psychology in my posts. I've dealt with anxiety and depression most of my life. And my husband has bipolar disorder. My hope is that I may show readers that it is possible for people to live positive, productive lives despite mental illness, challenges, or frustrations. I agree with you that we accept ourselves as it is without grumbling because God created us so He knows best what suits us . .Thanks for the song, an excellent choice.

I think we all have the internal battle of self-doubt to fight at times in our life. Knowing you’re not alone, helps to slay the dragon, I think. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hi Claudia very True what you shared we are all created unique and we are indeed equiped and gifted to do the good works God has prepared in advance for us to do and like Paul told us, we need to aim for perfection, not of couse as the world thinks about it but perfection in Love, God’s Love and we listen to Him so we know what we need to do and I too had to learn how to do this and as a new Christian many years ago in my heart I heard my Creators words and He said if I wanted to please Him and others…

I was to Trust in Him with all my heart; and not depend on my own understanding and in all my ways I was to acknowledge Him and He will show me the way to go, the right path to take. Proverbs 3:4-6

      Anne,
Thank you, again, for your beautiful words. Reminding myself to trust in God is so important. I’ve actually found that writing the statement down helps. For example, this afternoon at work I was feeling a bit anxious of making a phone call and seemingly out of the blue I felt compelled to write: “Do you trust that I can help you get through this anxiety?”. That trust is very important. ๐Ÿ™‚

That is very wise thinking Claudia, do you know that many talk about God’s Truth, sing about it, even preach about it but don’t really believe it in their heart or as you said trust that it is True and that He is not just saying it or lying and that He keeps His promises.

Does it surprise you Claudia when I say I have God’s wisdom, it does others they think I’m being arrogant and vain but what does God tell us….

James 1:5-8 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.

Well I believed that if God said it then it must be True, so I asked and received God’s wisdom ( see link ) I’m still learning from Jesus our only Teacher but I recognise His Truth and know when He teaches me something and do not doubt and it is always confirmed in Scripture.

    Claudia,
Good post! Keep up the good fight! As others have said, you are not alone. I have been creating a little prayer book for myself that I can carry everywhere for when I need to be uplifted. This doesn’t have to be “prayers” per se; some of what I have in mine are quotes, and some are prayers, and some are “AA” type thoughts and slogans. Design your own! And yes, keep listening to uplifting music.

Thanks. And thank you for the suggestion of carrying around a prayer/quote book. I have an iPhone and have several apps that are helpful, but viewing these apps can be a little distracting with all the other stuff on my phone. The notebook sounds like a better idea. ๐Ÿ™‚
