A Song I Dislike?

I’ve decided to do a music challenge I discovered at MindLovesMisery blog. It’s a 30 day music challenge. I’m not planning to do it in 30 days or in order. I find it’s easier and more fun to just post as I hear a song that fits any of the prompts and create a list under each post showing the prompts I’ve completed.

Here’s another song for the challenge.  The theme for this day of the music challenge was extra challenging for me.  I don’t feel comfortable posting a song I don’t like, so I decided to post a song that at one time I didn’t like.  Let me explain.  When I first heard Dirt Room by Blue October, I actually thought it was violent and negative.  I later found out that the lead singer of the group Blue October has a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and feels strongly about not being passive towards people who take advantage of a person for who they are.  Also, he is a nonviolent person.  When interviewed about the song by Soundsphere Magazine he said: “I try to teach self-expression instead of physical violence!…”  After finding out where the singer/songwriter was coming from, the song really hit home.  And I started to see the song more as a metaphor for negative thoughts, ideas, anxieties, perceptions, etc. that get in the way of a person’s livelihood and the anger and frustration that accompany the confrontation of those negatives.  The video that goes along with this song may be a bit disturbing to some  as it was to me until I saw the ending.  Be assured that the lady ends up calling the police and does not end up doing what you probably think she is going to do.  By the way, the lead singer, Justin Steward Furstenfeld, is from Texas and went to high school in, what I consider my hometown, Houston.

Day 24: A song you dislike (or at least didn’t like until you found out what it’s about)-

Dirt Room by Blue October

“Dirt Room”

I’m like a ghost
I’ll be living in a dirt room
Waiting for the day to be closer
To the window when you’re home
I’ll be standing by your back door
Reaching for the knife in my coat
I’m going to put it to your throat
Sweaty piggy, you’re a bad man
What a *** sad way to go
Your mother raised you as a joke
I should have wiped away a burden
Use the curtain in the kitchen to choke
You

You think you own me
You should have known me
You took the future and the food off my family’s plate
You think you’ll use me
I’m stronger than you
You take my money, but it’s useless
When you see what I do to you
Look what I do to you

Oh God then you awoke
You started screaming through the duct tape
Don’t ever think I’m letting you go
I’m busy digging you a hole
Now you’ll be living in a dirt room
Breathing through the straw of your own
Come on
I really think that this is fun for the money
I’ll make it comfy for the time wasted making you rich
I want to cover you in ants, bees and honey
Then take a picture for the cover of our album!

You think you own me
You should have known me
You took the future and the food off my family’s plate
You think you’ll use me
I’m stronger than you
You take my money, but it’s useless
When you see what I do to you

You think you own me
You should have known me
You took the future and the food off my family’s plate
You think you’ll use me
But I’m stronger than you
You take my money, but it’s useless
When you see what I do to you

And now I see you, oh
‘Cause your back’s against the wall
And finally you’re mine
You’re mine

You think you own me
You should have known me
You took the future and the food off my family’s plate
You think you’ll use me
I’m stronger than you
You take my money, but it’s useless
When you see what I do to you

I really think that this is fun for the money
We’ll make you comfy for the time wasted making you rich
I want to cover you in ants, bees and honey
Then take a picture for the cover of our album!

About Claudia

Hi!! My name is Claudia. Blogging is sort of a creative/therapeutic activity for me. I blog about being a wife, mother, student, caseworker, and simply being human through photography, words, music, and blog challenges. Mental illness has also been part of my life, so you'll sometimes find mental health and psychology in my posts. I've dealt with anxiety and depression most of my life. And my husband has bipolar disorder. My hope is that I may show readers that it is possible for people to live positive, productive lives despite mental illness, challenges, or frustrations.
